You won’t believe what Microsoft is doing with their HoloLens headsets!

Microsoft’s HoloLens 2 headsets are officially out of production, leaving us wondering what’s next in the world of augmented reality. While the current HoloLens 2 will continue to receive updates until 2027, Microsoft has not hinted at any successor on the horizon.

Here are some key points to consider regarding Microsoft’s decision to discontinue production of the HoloLens 2:

  • The original HoloLens, introduced in 2015, was Microsoft’s ambitious foray into the realm of augmented reality. Touted as a revolutionary device that would shape the future of virtual worlds, it paved the way for the more advanced HoloLens 2.

  • Released in 2019, the HoloLens 2 boasted a wider field of view, eye-tracking technology, and enhanced specifications, promising an even more immersive AR experience. However, it seems that Microsoft has now shifted its focus elsewhere.

Moving forward, Microsoft has joined forces with Anduril Industries, led by Palmer Luckey, the founder of Oculus VR, to enhance the IVAS mixed-reality headsets used by the US Army. The IVAS headset, based on HoloLens technology, integrates thermal and night-vision imaging sensors into a heads-up display for military applications.

It’s worth noting that the US Army has committed to investing up to $21.9 billion in the IVAS project over the next decade. Microsoft has been diligently working to address any technical challenges with the IVAS headset, with further testing scheduled for early 2025.

As we bid farewell to the HoloLens 2, it’s clear that Microsoft is exploring new avenues in the realm of augmented reality. While the future may be uncertain, one thing remains sure – technology continues to evolve, pushing boundaries and reshaping our reality. Keep an eye out for what comes next in the fascinating world of mixed reality.
