Violence has surged in the Virgin Islands, prompting the urgent response of the Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD). Acting Commissioner Mario Brooks addressed the recent wave of shootings that have resulted in seven deaths throughout the territory, delivering a powerful message to the perpetrators of violence.
- Emphasizing the Cowardice of Masked Attackers:
Brooks condemned those who hide behind masks while carrying out violent acts, labeling them as cowards. He urged them to stop their reckless behavior, stating, “The gloves are off. The officers have 100% support from me to go out there and do what they have to do.” - Alarming Crime Statistics:
The St Croix district has seen three homicides, while the St Thomas district has witnessed four in recent weeks. The loss of Hassani Paris in broad daylight has shaken the community. -
Community Cooperation Is Key:
Chief Detective Captain Sandra Colbourne highlighted the importance of community involvement in solving these crimes. She called on the public to step forward and provide crucial information to bring justice to the victims. Colbourne stressed that even one murder is too many, and four is simply unacceptable. -
Police Response Strategy:
Chief of Police for the St Thomas St John Water Island district, Stephen Phillip, outlined the department’s plan to combat the violence. Increased police presence and routine traffic stops are part of their strategy to restore peace and security to the community. Phillip expressed concern over the impact of violent crime on the economy, tourism, and overall well-being of the residents, stating, “This is the Virgin Islands, where we have sun and fun, not fear.” -
Commitment to Ending the Violence:
VIPD leadership is dedicated to implementing new initiatives to address the escalating violence. Chief Phillip voiced his frustration with the situation, questioning the senseless bloodshed and calling for an end to the gun violence plaguing the community.
To bring these perpetrators to justice and ensure the safety of all residents, authorities urge anyone with information about these crimes to come forward and assist in the investigations. It’s time for the community to stand united against violence in the Virgin Islands.
