As the 2024 presidential election approaches, the United States has taken a strong stance against foreign interference by imposing sanctions on organizations from Russia and Iran. These groups have been identified as attempting to manipulate the election through various means, causing concern about the integrity of the democratic process.
The Treasury Department revealed that these organizations engaged in activities aimed at “stoking socio-political tensions” and swaying voters in favor of their agendas. Here are the key points on how these groups attempted to interfere with the election:
- The Moscow-based Center for Geopolitical Expertise, with ties to Russia’s Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU), went to great lengths to conceal its activities. They created their own server with AI tools to generate disinformation quickly, spreading it through numerous fake online news outlets. Moreover, they funded US companies to maintain their server and operate a network of over 100 websites to propagate their campaign.
- In a particularly alarming incident, the Russian group manipulated a video to make baseless accusations against a 2024 vice presidential candidate, aiming to tarnish their reputation. This aggressive tactic to smear a candidate demonstrates the extent to which these organizations were willing to go to sway public opinion.

On the other hand, the Cognitive Design Production Center, a subsidiary of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was also implicated in planning election interference since at least 2023. Leading up to the election, Iranian nationals were indicted for a cyberattack against President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign, showing a coordinated effort to disrupt the electoral process.
In response to these threats, Bradley Smith, the Acting Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, emphasized the severity of the situation. He stated that the governments of Russia and Iran have not only targeted election processes and institutions but have also sought to sow division among the American people through disinformation campaigns.
It is crucial to safeguard the integrity of elections and protect democratic principles from foreign interference. The actions taken by the US reflect a commitment to upholding the democratic process and ensuring that elections are free from outside manipulation. Only by remaining vigilant and united can we preserve the foundations of democracy and protect the will of the people.
