Amidst the rusted remnants of America’s forgotten manufacturing heartland, hope shone like a beacon in Lordstown, Ohio. President Joe Biden’s ambitious economic agenda promised a revival, bringing well-paid union jobs and cutting-edge industries to a region long dismissed as part of the vanishing Rust Belt. The narrative was compelling, but the reality painted a starkly different picture.
Disappointment loomed over Lordstown as the community’s response to Biden’s efforts fell short of expectations. The theory underpinning Biden’s post-neoliberal economic policies, which aimed to win back the working class and broaden Democratic appeal, faced a critical test in this struggling town. While Biden’s policies did yield some tangible economic gains, they failed to translate into political success.
Despite Biden’s efforts to depart from neoliberal economic ideologies and overhaul domestic policies, his popularity plummeted, and his successor Vice President Kamala Harris found herself trapped in his shadow. The assumption that rejecting neoliberalism would bring back working-class voters from Trump was called into question as Trumpism showed no signs of being rooted in a revolt against neoliberalism after all.
In an attempt to salvage the party’s fortunes, some Democrats doubled down on Biden’s failed strategy, advocating for louder and more aggressive pursuit of the post-neoliberal agenda. However, the harsh reality of the 2024 election outcome forced a reckoning with the flawed premise upon which the strategy was built.
The narrative blaming neoliberalism for Trump’s 2016 victory and the subsequent embrace of post-neoliberal policies failed to stand up to scrutiny. The Democrats’ historical coalitions and policy divergences since the Reagan era rendered the neoliberalism critique ineffective at explaining the complex political landscape. The insistence on a post-neoliberal revival as the path to electoral success seemed misguided as Biden’s transformative economic agenda failed to resonate with voters.
Despite attempts to explain away the electoral defeat, excuses ranged from blaming Harris’s centrism to asserting that time was needed for Biden’s policies to bear fruit. However, the stark reality of electoral outcomes in regions like Lordstown, and beyond, where investments failed to translate into political gains, cast doubt on the viability of the post-neoliberal strategy.
As Biden’s presidency languished in unpopularity and the Democrats faced backlash at the polls, the uncomfortable truth emerged that there was more to political success than a populist economic agenda. The notion that a singular formula could reverse the rightward trend of the working class had been put to the test and, in the eyes of voters, had failed. Populism alone was not enough to win hearts and votes.
Moving forward, it became imperative for the Democratic Party to reassess its approach, acknowledging the limitations of the post-neoliberal theory and exploring new strategies to resonate with voters across diverse segments. While some policies may hold value on their own merits, the overarching narrative that promised a populist triumph had crumbled in the face of electoral realities. The road ahead for the party demanded a fresh perspective, one that prioritized a nuanced understanding of voter needs, aspirations, and concerns beyond the confines of ideological doctrines.
