The US is now focused only on China and can no longer hold two fronts. Even worse, in order to separate Russia from China they are willing to betray the allies in Europe. I think they miscalculated, for two reasons.
The first is that their allies in Asia are taking note of the American turnabout and are reflecting on the convenience of getting too close to an unreliable ally, who might dump them tomorrow. I am thinking about Japan and Korea.
Second, Europe is no longer the devastated continent that it was after WW2, when Americans and Russians could make a deal for a spartition in zones of influence. It is likely that the US turnaround will push for rearmament, perhaps even nuclear, of the major European countries. At that point, there would be no reason not to realign international relations, with a rapprochement with China. I remember that Italy had already signed an agreement to participate in the BRS, which it then dropped due to American pressure. -
