Beware: Safety Measures to Prevent ATM Robberies
In the early hours of February 28, the Banco Popular location fell victim to its second armed robbery targeting ATM users, prompting the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) to issue a public alert. This incident closely resembled a previous robbery on January 11, where armed men forcibly took cash from victims before fleeing the scene.
To combat these crimes and ensure the safety of citizens, the RVIPF has implemented enhanced security measures. Detective Chief Inspector Kenrick Davis shed light on the contributing factors to such incidents, stating that crimes often occur when there is a motivated offender, a vulnerable victim, and a lack of capable guardianship. By disrupting any of these variables through collaboration between citizens and law enforcement, the occurrence of such crimes can be significantly reduced.
Davis recommended various safety measures to prevent being targeted by criminals, such as varying withdrawal times and locations, using ATMs in well-lit and populated areas, and considering digital transactions as an alternative to cash withdrawals. Additionally, strengthening security with CCTV cameras, improved lighting, increased police patrols, and neighborhood watch initiatives can deter criminal activity by increasing the risk of detection.
The RVIPF has issued the following recommendations to the public:
- Avoid late-night withdrawals whenever possible
- Vary transaction times and locations
- Be vigilant of surroundings before using an ATM
- Opt for well-lit ATMs in populated areas
- Consider digital transactions as an alternative to cash withdrawals
In light of these incidents, the police are actively investigating and urge anyone with information to come forward. Reports can be made via the non-emergency number 311, the Intelligence Unit at 368-9339, or anonymously through Crimestoppers at 800-8477 (TIPS).
Let’s work together to safeguard our communities and prevent future incidents of ATM robberies. Stay alert, follow safety measures, and report any suspicious activities to the authorities promptly. Your vigilance can make a significant difference in maintaining security and peace in our neighborhoods.
