Shocking! FDA Discovers Lead in Cinnamon – What You Need to Know!

Health alerts issued by U.S. officials have brought to light the contamination of several varieties of ground cinnamon available at certain discount and specialty stores with high levels of lead, urging consumers to dispose of these products immediately.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has raised concerns about at least 10 packaged ground cinnamon brands available at Dollar Tree, Patel Brothers, and Eurogrocery stores across multiple states. To ensure consumer safety, the FDA has advised companies to recall these products, cautioning customers against purchasing or consuming them. Although no illnesses have been reported so far, the potential risks associated with these contaminated cinnamon products are grave.

Key Points to Note:

  • Brands Affected: The FDA has identified several cinnamon brands to avoid, including El Chilar, Marcum, SWAD, Supreme Tradition, Compania Indillor Orientale, ALB Flavor, Shahzada, Spice Class, and La Frontera. This list was further expanded with an earlier alert issued for El Servidor brand cinnamon on July 25.
  • Lead Levels: Tests conducted by state programs revealed lead concentrations ranging from slightly over 2 parts per million to around 7 parts per million in most of the spices. Notably, the El Servidor brand exhibited a lead concentration of 20 parts per million.
  • FDA Guidelines: While there is no established FDA limit for heavy metals in spices, the organization recommends a lead limit of 1 part per million in candies intended for small children. The American Spice Trade Association suggests restricting lead levels to 2 parts per million in bark spices like cinnamon.

The presence of lead in spices is primarily attributed to natural sources such as soil and water, with the potential for contamination from environmental pollution or industrial processes. In some instances, spices have been adulterated with lead to enhance color or weight, thereby increasing their market value.

Health experts underscore the imperative need to steer clear of lead-laden spices due to the severe health implications associated with lead exposure. While the immediate impact of consuming contaminated spices might seem negligible, prolonged exposure could lead to adverse health outcomes.

Preventive Measures:

  • Select Trustworthy Brands: Consumers are advised to opt for spices from suppliers who have publicly declared their commitment to monitoring sources and ensuring product safety. Purchasing spices from such reliable sources may incur a slightly higher cost but guarantees superior quality and reduced health risks.
