The vast and intricate maritime sector of the Falkland Islands is set to receive a significant boost with the establishment of a new Maritime Committee. This committee, slated to be advisory to the Executive Council, will play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety of seafarers, ships, sustainable maritime practices, and the protection of the marine environment.
The maritime sector in the Falkland Islands encompasses a wide range of activities, from maritime transportation to fishing, cruise ship operations, hydrocarbons exploration, and leisure pursuits, all of which are crucial for the Islands’ economy. Despite existing committees focusing on specific aspects of the maritime industry, such as the Fisheries Advisory Committee, there is a clear gap for a comprehensive Maritime Committee that addresses all facets of maritime activity in and around the Islands.
Following the approval by the Executive Council during its meeting on the 17th of December, plans are underway for the establishment of this much-needed committee. Receiving widespread support from the maritime sector, the Committee will include representatives from various segments of the industry to ensure a holistic approach to addressing the sector’s needs.
Chris Moorey, the Head of the Falkland Islands Maritime Authority, underscored the importance of the sea to the Islands’ way of life and the critical role played by the maritime sector in the community’s well-being. Expressing his delight at the approval of the Committee, Moorey emphasized the need for consultation with potential members to kickstart the committee’s activities successfully. The Falkland Islands Maritime Authority will spearhead the inaugural event and provide a comprehensive briefing for attendees to ensure a smooth transition into regular Maritime Committee meetings.
