Revamp Your Organization’s Diversity Initiatives Now: Key Steps to Success

The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is often associated with long lines, frustration, and anxiety for many people. However, for new drivers, the DMV symbolizes excitement, anticipation, and even joy. Our choice of words can either bring people together or drive them apart.

When discussing issues like fair housing advocacy, I deliberately bring up the DMV, among other contentious topics, to provoke strong reactions from my students. Words have the power to evoke emotions that can unite or alienate those we aim to work with. It’s essential to use inclusive language that fosters a sense of belonging and equality.

One term that frequently sparks debate is DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion). This phrase is often misconstrued as a merit-based concept rather than a fundamental right. Fair housing is not something to be earned or deserved but a basic entitlement to everyone. We have federal laws like the Fair Housing Act of 1968 and additional state and local statutes that protect various groups, including race, disability, sexual orientation, and more.

The real estate industry has a complex history of opposing fair housing initiatives. Realtor associations have, at times, actively resisted efforts to promote access and opportunity for all. While there have been advocates within the industry, there have also been instances of exclusion and discrimination against certain groups of professionals.

Understanding this history is crucial to avoiding the mistakes of the past. We must work towards inclusivity and equality in real estate, ensuring that everyone has access to the same opportunities. Rather than disbanding efforts for diversity, equity, and inclusion, we should reinforce the importance of providing access and opportunity for all individuals.

In conclusion, the focus should be on creating a welcoming environment in the real estate industry, where everyone, regardless of background or identity, can thrive. By reframing the conversation to center around access and opportunity, we can move towards a more inclusive and equitable future for real estate professionals and clients alike. Let’s work together to promote fairness and equality in the housing market, leaving behind the divisive rhetoric to build a more united and diverse industry.
