Argentina Joins Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty
In a momentous decision, Argentina, under the leadership of Javier Milei, has become the 82nd country to join the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty. This initiative, spearheaded by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva during the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, aims to combat global issues of hunger and poverty through a collaborative effort. With this latest addition, all G20 nations are now part of this alliance, alongside the African Union, the European Union, various financial institutions, international organizations, and philanthropic entities, totaling 148 founding members.
Key Points of the Alliance:
Membership has been open since July 2024, allowing countries to join at their convenience. Apart from G20 nations, countries like Uruguay, Ukraine, Switzerland, Nigeria, Angola, and others have already committed to the cause.
The alliance focuses on implementing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) tailored to the specific needs of each member country.
Goals to reach 500 million people with cash transfer programs by 2030, expand quality school meals for 150 million children in poverty-stricken areas, and raise funds through multilateral development banks are set to be achieved.
Governance Structure:
The governance of the alliance will be linked to the G20 but will not be limited to its member nations. It will be overseen by a Council of Champions and a Support Mechanism, with full operational capability expected by mid-2025, until which Brazil will provide interim support.
The alliance comprises a diverse range of nations, including Argentina, Australia, China, France, India, and many others. Moreover, institutions like the United Nations, World Bank Group, and philanthropic organizations such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are vital partners in this joint initiative.
The Future of the Alliance:
The Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty aims to mobilize resources, knowledge, and support across borders to tackle these pressing global challenges collectively. By leveraging the diverse expertise and resources of its members, the alliance seeks to make a significant impact on reducing hunger and poverty worldwide.
Through collaborative efforts and a strong commitment to shared goals, the alliance envisions a future where every individual has access to basic necessities and opportunities for a better life. It is a call to action for nations and organizations worldwide to join forces in the fight against hunger and poverty, paving the way for a more equitable and prosperous world for all.
