Hi Money Minder,

I’m currently in my second semester of my freshmen year of college and I feel behind compared to the people around me. I have a son due in early June and I’m struggling to see the other side. I’ve been blessed to have my mother pay for my 4 years completely so I know I won’t ever have to worry about student loans. Even with no debt, I don’t see myself loving the next 3 years of college where I’m currently in the business administration with no focus (Finance, Business analysis, accounting, etc). My plan B if I were to drop out would be to go to trade school and become an electrician apprentice. I understand it’s hard work, but the 100K ceiling comes quicker than the traditional pathways out of college even though they max out much higher. I’m wondering if my stress is relatable and reasonable and I want to know if anyone else made it to the light side of the tunnel despite feeling lost at one point. Thank you.

Best,
Road to Success

Response from THE MONEY MINDER:

Hello There,

Congratulations on your upcoming addition to your family! It’s completely understandable to feel overwhelmed and stressed, especially when balancing college and impending parenthood. Your concerns are valid, and it’s crucial to address them proactively. Firstly, it’s commendable that your mother is covering your college expenses, alleviating the pressure of student loans. However, feeling behind your peers can happen for various reasons, and it’s essential to remember that everyone’s journey is unique.

As you navigate this challenging time, it might be beneficial to seek support and guidance from your college’s counseling services or academic advisors. They can provide resources to help you better manage your academic workload while preparing for the arrival of your child. Additionally, exploring different study strategies, time management techniques, and seeking mentorship from faculty members in the business administration department can provide clarity on potential career paths within the field.

Considering a shift to a trade school for an electrician apprenticeship is a practical and viable option. Electricians can have lucrative career opportunities with a high earning potential. It’s essential to weigh the pros and cons of both paths and choose the one that aligns with your long-term goals and aspirations. You may find fulfillment and success in either field as long as you remain dedicated and determined.

Remember, feeling lost or uncertain about the future is a common sentiment, especially during significant life transitions. Your stress is relatable, and it’s crucial to take one step at a time, focusing on your well-being and your family’s future. Stay resilient, seek guidance from trusted individuals, and trust in your abilities to overcome obstacles. You have the strength and resilience to navigate this challenging period and emerge stronger on the other side.

Wishing you all the best as you navigate this journey towards a brighter future.
