“I have a credit card debt of around 5500”: Struggling to make ends meet with low wages and high interest. How can I pay off my debt?

Hi Money Minder,

I’m in a tough spot with my credit card debt sitting at around $5500. I’m bringing home about $14 an hour, working 35 hours a week, and getting paid every week. My rent clocks in at $310 a month, and utilities add about $50 more.

The interest on the debt is really killing me. How can I best tackle this mountain of debt?

Cheers,
Debt Dilemma Dave

Farewell: Thanks for any advice you can offer!

Response from THE MONEY MINDER:

Hello There,

I understand that dealing with credit card debt can be incredibly stressful, especially when the interest keeps piling up. It sounds like you have a good grasp of your monthly expenses, which is a great start. Given that you make around $14 an hour and work 35 hours per week, it’s important to create a realistic budget to prioritize paying off your debt.

One practical strategy would be to create a detailed budget outlining all your expenses and income. Identify any areas where you can cut back on spending to allocate more money towards paying off your debt. Consider setting up automatic payments towards your credit card debt each time you get paid weekly.

It might also be worth exploring if you can increase your income through picking up extra shifts or looking for part-time work to supplement your earnings. Additionally, reaching out to your credit card company to inquire about lower interest rates or payment plans could potentially alleviate some of the financial burden.

Remember, the key is to stay disciplined and committed to your goal of paying off your debt. It may take time, but with a clear plan in place, you can chip away at it. Stay focused and determined, and you’ll eventually find yourself on the road to financial freedom.

Best of luck in tackling your credit card debt and taking control of your finances. If you need further assistance or advice, feel free to reach out. Take care and remember, financial freedom is within reach.

Farewell from THE MONEY MINDER.
