Hi Money Minder,

I have a bit of a tricky situation on my hands. Unfortunately, my ex (we were still good friends) recently passed away and I’ve just found out that I am still listed as a beneficiary on some of his assets. I’ve managed to track down a 401k that I’m named on, and I suspect there are some IRA’s with Edward Jones where I may also be listed as a beneficiary. However, I don’t have any account numbers or details. I do have his social security number though. Can I call them up and ask if I’m listed as a beneficiary?

I’m not the executor of his estate and we were never married. He didn’t have a will either.

I have a feeling there might be a life insurance policy somewhere, but I have no clue where to start looking. He never shared much information about his accounts with me, so I’m a bit lost. Sadly, his family won’t be much help either.

Would appreciate your guidance on this one, Money Minder.

Thanks a bunch,

Mystery Account Hunter

Response from THE MONEY MINDER:

"Hello There,"

I’m sorry to hear about the passing of your ex, and I appreciate you reaching out for guidance during this challenging time. In regards to the 401k and potential IRAs with Edward Jones, you can definitely reach out to the financial institutions with his social security number to see if you are listed as a beneficiary. They may require some additional verification, but it’s worth trying to determine your status.

Since you are not the executor of his estate and there was no will in place, it may be more challenging to navigate the process. Regarding the life insurance policy, you can start by checking with his past employers or insurance companies he may have had policies with. They may require some proof of relationship or documentation, but it’s a good place to start looking.

I understand that not having the support of his family complicates things, but it’s commendable that you are taking the initiative to sort through his financial affairs. Remember to take care of yourself throughout this process, and consider seeking guidance from a financial advisor or legal professional to help you navigate these complex matters.

All the best from THE MONEY MINDER.
