‘I barely get any money saved’: I feel trapped living paycheck to paycheck in a low-paying job. How can I break free and secure a better financial future?

Hi Money Minder,

Hey Money Minder,

I’ve been thinking a lot about moving to a new place because where I am now just isn’t cutting it. I’m only making between $12-15 an hour, which feels like peanuts compared to what other folks are making. My cousin in a different state says Amazon pays $22 an hour, and some friends are pulling in over 60 hours a week with overtime. And get this – they don’t even have a college degree!

I’m barely scraping by from paycheck to paycheck. Most of my money goes straight to rent, bills, and everyday expenses. I haven’t even tried a side job, but I’m considering DoorDash or Uber. Although, I’m worried about spending all that money on gas for food delivery gigs.

Maybe I should prioritize finishing my college degree first. It could lead to a better-paying job, but I’m stuck on what to study. I feel like I’m failing at life because I’m not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed. It’s tough, especially when I see others thriving without a care in the world. I’m in my mid 20s, but I can’t shake this sense of fear about my future.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Take care,

Thank you for reaching out. How can we assist you today with your financial needs?

"Hello There,"

I understand the frustration that comes with feeling stuck in a financial rut. It’s definitely disheartening to see others seemingly getting ahead while you’re struggling to make ends meet. However, comparing your situation to others can sometimes be counterproductive. Each person’s circumstances are unique, and what works for someone else might not necessarily work for you.

Given your current predicament, it might be beneficial to consider a few practical steps to improve your financial situation. Firstly, exploring potential side hustles like DoorDash or Uber could provide you with some additional income. While these options may not be perfect, every little bit helps when you’re living paycheck to paycheck. Additionally, looking into educational opportunities that align with your interests and career goals could lead to better-paying job prospects in the future.

It’s perfectly normal to feel lost or unsure about your path in your mid-20s. Many people go through similar struggles, and it’s essential to remember that it’s never too late to make a change. Take some time to reflect on what truly interests you and what you envision for your future. Seeking guidance from a career counselor or mentor could also provide valuable insights and direction.

Remember, it’s okay to seek help and support. Whether it’s reaching out to a financial advisor for budgeting assistance or a counselor to navigate your career aspirations, there are resources available to aid you on your journey towards financial stability. Stay focused, stay motivated, and take small steps towards your goals. Your dedication and perseverance will pay off in the long run.

Best of luck on your financial and personal journey. Remember, every challenge is an opportunity for growth and improvement.
