‘Tis the season for joy and gratitude! I trust the holiday spirit has found a cozy spot in your heart, much like it has in RB40Jr’s. The simplicity and wonder of winter break are a child’s delight, reminding us to embrace the pure joy of the season. This year, we’re jetting off to California to spend the holidays with loved ones, a departure from our usual routine, but a change we welcome with open arms.
Gratitude, I learned recently, has the power to fuel happiness, and isn’t that what the holiday season is all about? Despite the rollercoaster ride that was 2024, let’s challenge ourselves to focus on the positives, count our blessings, and spread joy wherever we go. After all, most of us are fortunate beyond measure, a fact that deserves acknowledgment far more often.
Peak Portlandia!
In a moment that felt like peak Portlandia, I stumbled upon a hidden culinary gem right in our neighborhood – ginkgo seeds. These unassuming nuts, foraged from a street tree, took me on a delightful trip down memory lane to simpler times spent cracking nuts with my grandmother. Who knew those stinky ginkgo fruits held such a delicious secret within?
Inspired by the unexpected bounty, I crafted a ginkgo plate in my ceramic class a month prior, a serendipitous alignment of events that felt like a wink from the universe. And thus began my culinary experiment with the ginkgo seeds, a delightful delicacy that comes with a warning label – moderation is key.
Health is wealth
As we navigate the inevitable changes that come with age, health becomes an even more precious commodity. 2024 was a year marked by health challenges, both for myself and Mrs. RB40, yet we are grateful for the care we receive from compassionate healthcare providers. Although hurdles exist, including a recent insurance denial for RB40Jr’s cochlear implant, we approach such challenges with resilience and determination, knowing that our health is priceless.
Money matters
In the realm of finances, 2024 was a banner year for investors, with the stock market soaring to new heights, propelling our net worth to dizzying levels. The decreasing stream of active income signals a transition towards full retirement, a prospect that fills me with anticipation rather than dread. While money isn’t the key to happiness, financial stability undoubtedly paves the way for a more relaxed and fulfilling life.
New and old passions
Exploring new hobbies has been a source of immense joy this year, from pottery classes that birthed wonky yet lovable creations to rediscovering the cheerful melodies of the ukulele. The act of creating, whether through clay or music, has gifted me with a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment that transcends perfection. In the imperfections lie beauty, and such is the essence of a life well-lived.
Family ties
At the core of it all lies the profound gratitude for the gift of family. Celebrating 25 years of marriage with Mrs. RB40, I reflect on the resilience and growth that have shaped our journey together. RB40Jr’s presence, too, is a daily reminder of life’s simple joys, his unwavering adherence to rules a testament to his kind and considerate nature. As we bask in the warmth of togetherness this holiday season, I am reminded that life’s true treasures lie not in possessions, but in love shared and bonds cherished.
As this year draws to a close, let us take a moment to reflect on the countless blessings we’ve been granted and the resilience we’ve shown in the face of adversity. May the spirit of gratitude guide us into the new year, filling our hearts with hope, love, and an unwavering sense of contentment. Here’s to a bright and joyful 2025!
