    • Guyana exceeded expectations by producing 725,282 metric tonnes of rice in 2024, a significant milestone for the nation’s agriculture sector.
    • From 5.7 tonnes per hectare in 2020, the yield soared to 6.6 tonnes per hectare in 2024, showcasing remarkable progress.
  2. Thriving Rice Exports
    • The country exported 425,490 metric tonnes of rice and by-products, generating US$254 million from trade with 30 countries.
    • With the establishment of new export markets, Guyana’s agricultural prowess continues to grow on a global scale.
  3. Innovative Rice Varieties
    • Over the last four years, the introduction of four new rice varieties has been a game-changer for production.
    • The latest addition, GRD 18, boasts a yield potential of seven to nine tonnes per hectare, joining the ranks of other high-yielding varieties like GRDB 16, GRDB 17, and GRDB 18.
  4. Investment in Corn and Soya
    • Aiming for self-sufficiency, Guyanese farmers cultivated 12,000 acres of corn and soya in 2024, with plans for expansion in the coming year.
    • Investments in infrastructure and technology, like the construction of roads, a silo, and a conveying system, highlight the commitment to enhancing corn and soya production.
  5. Black-eyed and Red Beans Initiative
    • The ambitious goal of producing all black-eyed and red beans domestically is underway, with significant progress in land preparation, road construction, and silo procurement.
    • A promising partnership in the Kimbia area is set to yield results, with expectations of a bountiful bean harvest by March 2025.
