Barbados is gearing up to host CARIFESTA XV, inviting the entire region to join in from August 22 to 31. The theme this year is "Caribbean Roots, Global Excellence," a celebration of the rich traditions and vibrant talents that define Caribbean culture. Minister Shantal Munro-Knight, responsible for Culture in the Prime Minister’s Office, highlighted the three pillars that will guide the event: honoring heritage, celebrating excellence, and building a sustainable future.
- Honoring Our Heritage: The event will kick off with the opening ceremony and Caribbean Street Parade, followed by the "Icon Nights" concert honoring cultural legends. This pillar aims to showcase the diverse array of rich Caribbean traditions and highlight the resilience and adaptability of Caribbean culture.
- Celebrating Caribbean Excellence: Activities such as the "Holy Train" spiritual sunrise gathering, "Sunday Food" culinary experience, and Heritage Exhibitions will showcase the vibrancy and talent of the Caribbean region through music, fashion, culinary arts, and literature. Country nights, the Grand Market and Trade Hub, and the Film Festival will also highlight the unique artistic expressions of each nation.
- Building a Sustainable and Resilient Future: Discussions and events under this pillar will focus on climate action, economic sustainability, and social progress. "Big Conversations" on Caribbean identity, resilience, and sustainability, "Sustainability by the Sea," and the CARIFESTA Business Forum will address these pressing issues and explore ways to preserve and elevate Caribbean traditions while incorporating innovation and sustainability into the future.
In addition to these pillars, CARIFESTA XV offers a wide range of attractions for both locals and tourists alike. From the UWI Symposium on culture, technology, and sustainability to Wellness Day showcasing traditional Caribbean wellness practices, there is something for everyone to enjoy and learn from. Minister Munro-Knight highlighted that the Festival is not only a celebration of culture but also a reminder of the region’s resilience in the face of challenges.
