Empowering Portland Fisherfolks: Join the Jamaica Social Stock Exchange and NCB Foundation in Making a Difference!

In a heartwarming collaboration, the Jamaica Social Stock Exchange (JSSE) has teamed up with the National Commercial Bank Foundation (NCBF) to extend a helping hand to fisherfolk in Portland affected by the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl. This partnership has resulted in an aid package that has been distributed to 58 fisherfolk from communities including Hope Bay, Orange Bay, St. Margaret’s Bay, and Manchioneal. Each recipient will receive $25,000, totaling $1,450,000, to assist in repairing equipment damaged during the storm.

  1. Commitment to Social Capital:

    • Managing Director of the Jamaica Stock Exchange, Dr. Marlene Street-Forrest, emphasized the purpose of the JSSE in utilizing social capital to address societal needs. She highlighted the practical approach taken by the JSSE in enhancing the lives of those in need, citing the aid package for fisherfolk in Portland as a prime example of the organization’s mission.
  2. Critical Assistance for Fisherfolk:
    • Manager of the JSSE, Nora Blake, stressed the critical timing of the aid for fisherfolk, noting the challenges they faced in returning to normal productivity levels post-Hurricane Beryl. The donation is expected to facilitate the repair of essential equipment used in their trade, aiding in both recovery and food security.

The collaboration between JSSE and the Jamaica Fisherman Co-operative Union (JFCU) resulted in the provision of funds from donations raised by the JSSE and NCBF, respectively. These funds, sourced from their parent companies – the Jamaica Stock Exchange (JSE) and National Commercial Bank (NCB), were specifically allocated to assist in post-Beryl recovery efforts.

Expressing commitment to social intervention, an NCB Foundation spokesperson reiterated the organization’s dedication to aiding affected individuals in restoring their livelihoods. The NCBF functions as a catalyst for social change and intervention in Jamaica, striving to make a positive impact on communities.

The Jamaica Fisherman Cooperative Union, serving as the umbrella body for the fishing industry in Jamaica, expressed gratitude in partnering with the JSSE and facilitating the distribution of grants to fisherfolk in need. The organization highlighted the importance of supporting its members and commended the collaboration with JSSE for its positive impact.

Concluding the initiative by the JSSE and NCBF, it is evident that the collective efforts have made a significant difference in the lives of the fisherfolk in Portland. Through strategic alliances and a shared commitment to social welfare, these organizations have exemplified the power of collaboration in providing essential aid to communities in need. Moving forward, it is essential to continue supporting social initiatives that contribute to the betterment of society and uphold the values of compassion and solidarity.
