Don’t Believe What You Read! Crypto Scammers Infiltrate OpenAI’s Press Account

Scammers Strike Again: OpenAI’s Battle Against Phishing Attacks

The digital landscape is a battlefield, and OpenAI is right in the crosshairs of some nefarious actors. Recently, the official OpenAI press account on X fell victim to the same cryptocurrency scammers who had previously targeted the company’s leadership. Here’s the breakdown of what happened:

  • Late Monday afternoon, a new account called OpenAI Newsroom made a post about a supposed new blockchain token branded by OpenAI, named “$OPENAI”.
  • The post claimed that “$OPENAI” was the bridge between AI and blockchain technology, offering all OpenAI users a share of its initial supply and access to future beta programs.
  • However, the “$OPENAI” token was a hoax, leading users to a phishing site designed to look like OpenAI’s official website.
  • The fake site urged users to link their cryptocurrency wallets, putting their login credentials at risk of theft.

This type of attack is not new to OpenAI. In the past, similar phishing campaigns targeted various key figures within the organization. Notably, OpenAI CTO Mira Murati’s account had previously shared a message promoting the fictional “$OPENAI” token. Additionally, the accounts of OpenAI chief scientist Jakub Pachocki and researcher Jason Wei had also fallen prey to hackers who published scam posts mirroring the recent incident involving the OpenAI Newsroom account.

The broader implications of such cyber attacks are alarming, as they not only harm individuals but also erode trust in the digital ecosystem. With reports of other tech companies and celebrities facing similar crypto scam issues, the risks are clear. In 2023 alone, Americans lost $5.6 billion to cryptocurrency scams, marking a significant increase from the previous year. The trend has continued into 2024, with reports of over 50,000 scams costing consumers nearly $2.5 billion in the first half of the year, according to the FTC.

As the digital landscape becomes increasingly treacherous, vigilance and awareness are paramount. OpenAI and other entities must remain diligent in safeguarding their accounts and maintaining transparency with their users. Only through collective efforts can we combat the rising tide of cyber threats and foster a safer online environment for all.
