One fateful day, my annual blood test results shook me to the core. My triglycerides level was off the charts, reaching a staggering 1200 mg/dL. The interrogation from my doctor felt like a scene from a mystery novel. It didn’t take long for her to ascertain that my recent wine indulgences were to blame. What a wake-up call! While I was aware that alcohol could elevate triglyceride levels, it had slipped my mind entirely.
My battle with triglycerides began over two decades ago, a time when beer and wine were staples in my life. Living in Portland during the 90s exposed me to a vibrant microbrewery scene, each neighborhood boasting unique breweries. I fondly remember the IPAs at Bridgeport Brewery in NW Portland, a taste revelation after my college days of generic light beers. Nights out with friends sampling new brews were a regular occurrence. However, all of this changed when my triglyceride issue surfaced. Since then, my alcohol consumption dwindled to a few drinks per month.
Unfortunately, this year saw a resurgence in my drinking habits. A few beverages per month blossomed into weekly indulgences, a shift that could be harmless for most, but dangerous for someone with triglyceride concerns. I attribute this lapse to Mrs. RB40, who, amidst a midlife crisis, has been imbibing more frequently than usual. Caught up in the moment, I joined her in raising a glass, forgetting the impact alcohol could have on my health.
The verdict was clear – I needed to bid adieu to alcohol without hesitation. While my doctor advised abstaining for three days prior to the next blood test, I opted for cold turkey. It seemed evident that my system wasn’t compatible with alcohol, so total abstinence seemed the wisest choice. Joined by my friend Jim @ Route to Retire, who also recently kicked the alcohol habit, I embraced this new chapter with optimism.
The impending blood test looms ahead, and I’m hopeful to witness a decline in my triglycerides. At this stage of life, health takes precedence, especially given the aspiration to lead a long, fulfilling life alongside Mrs. RB40 now that financial stability has been achieved. Her commitment to reduce alcohol consumption alongside me adds further motivation. As the guardian of the wine cabinet, forgoing new purchases will quickly deplete our stock. Here’s to a healthier future!
