Guyana’s agricultural sector is stepping into the future with the launch of a groundbreaking rice variety named ‘GRDB 18.’ This move is a testament to the country’s commitment to innovation and technology in modernizing agriculture. Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha expressed the importance of this new variety, highlighting its ability to withstand water lodging and produce superior grain quality, ensuring competitiveness in both local and international markets.
Key points from the discussions surrounding the launch include:
1. The chief scientist at the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB), Mahendra Persaud, shared promising results from 120 trials, showing no decline in rice recovery. The new variety has demonstrated an average of 7.2 tons per hectare, indicating strong yield potential.
2. GRDB 18, unveiled in a rice field in Nooten Zuil, East Coast Demerara, boasts resilience features such as the ability to endure late harvesting and harsh conditions like drought. This development offers hope for improved sustainability in the rice sector.
Mustapha emphasized the swift progress made by GRDB, introducing two rice varieties within four years, with GRDB 16 hitting the market in 2020. Looking ahead, he urged the board to continue developing high-yielding varieties to enhance quality and increase rice production further.
Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Madanlall Ramraj, stressed the importance of varietal development in boosting rice production. With the rice industry valued at GUY$100 billion, significant investments have been made in seed paddy sales, exports, local sales, and agricultural infrastructure. Ramraj reassured the farming community that the Ministry of Agriculture remains dedicated to supporting and benefiting them through interventions.
In conclusion, the journey towards agricultural advancement in Guyana is marked by the introduction of GRDB 18, a symbol of progress and innovation in the rice sector. The collaborative efforts of scientists, policymakers, and farmers pave the way for a brighter future with sustainable practices and increased productivity. As Guyana aims to expand its market reach and enhance its agricultural landscape, the commitment to excellence and growth remains steadfast.
