Barbados PM Warns: The Year 2025 Will Shape Our Legacy Like Never Before!

2025: Defining a Legacy

Amidst a backdrop of global challenges and uncertainties, Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley has proclaimed that the year 2025 will be a defining moment that shapes the legacy of our generation. As she transitions into the presidency of the Caribbean Community (Caricom), Mottley emphasizes the crucial need for unity and collective action in the face of adversity.

  • Embracing Resilience: Mottley acknowledges the ongoing aftershocks of the Covid-19 pandemic, the looming climate crisis, and the conflicts in various regions that reverberate beyond borders. She highlights the pressing issues in Haiti and emphasizes the importance of finding compassionate solutions within the community.

  • Crafting Solutions: The Prime Minister stresses the urgency for the Caribbean to not only weather these storms but also to take the lead in developing solutions for a changing world. She calls for the full implementation of the Caricom Single Market and Economy (CSME) to facilitate the free movement of goods, skills, labor, and services across the region.

  • Economic Vision: Mottley views the CSME as more than just an economic agenda; it is a vision of unity and opportunity for small states to achieve greater potential together. She emphasizes the significance of implementing the recommendations of the Caricom Commission on Economy and pooling efforts in areas such as investment, skills, and procurement.

  • Global Advocacy: Addressing injustices in the global financial system that disproportionately affect Small-Island and Low-lying Developing States (SIDS), Mottley advocates for reforms and equitable access to financing. Caricom will continue to champion these reforms and collaborate with vulnerable countries in the fight for a fair financial landscape globally.

  • Building Resilience: Mottley underscores the importance of the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index (MVI) to secure critical resources for the region’s future in the face of crises beyond their control. She emphasizes the need for a collective effort to tackle violence as a public health issue and urges the international community to address the historical exploitation of slavery and colonialism.

As Caricom consists of fifteen member states, including Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, and others, the region stands at a pivotal moment in defining its legacy for future generations. The year 2025 represents an opportunity for unity, resilience, and collective action to navigate through challenges and shape a brighter future for all.
