Nieman Lab’s Andrew Deck tested ChatGPT’s abilities by asking for links to exclusive stories from major publishers like the Associated Press, The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, and more. Shockingly, the AI chatbot produced URLs that led to nonexistent pages, exposing the flawed nature of its predictive algorithm. OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, acknowledged the issue while vaguely promising a better experience in the future without addressing the fake URLs.

Despite the impending improvements, it remains uncertain when or how reliable these enhancements will be. News publishers continue to exchange their valuable content for financial gain, while AI companies like Microsoft view anything published online as fair game for training their models.
