In 2015, the world united to solidify the Paris Agreement, a groundbreaking pact involving nearly every nation to combat the climate crisis and safeguard our planet for the generations to come. Upon assuming office, one of my initial actions was to recommit the United States to this agreement, restoring our position as a global climate leader and reinforcing our commitment to international climate ambitions.
- Accelerating Global Efforts: Through leveraging our country’s leadership on climate action domestically, my Administration has played a vital role in advancing global initiatives to combat climate change. At forums like COPs 26, 27, and 28, we have worked diligently to drive down emissions, reduce energy expenditures, foster job creation, preserve ecosystems, and enhance resilience, all while boosting our economy.
- Historic Milestone at COP29: Today, a significant breakthrough was achieved at COP29, underscored by the unwavering dedication of a robust US delegation. In Baku, our call to action compelled nations to make a decisive choice: either condemn vulnerable communities to worsening climate catastrophes or take a stand to lead us on a more promising trajectory towards a sustainable future.
- Ambitious Climate Finance Goal: A momentous 2035 international climate finance target has been established through collective efforts. This milestone will facilitate the mobilization of essential funds – from various sources – to expedite the shift towards clean, eco-friendly economies in developing nations, simultaneously creating new markets for American-produced electric vehicles, batteries, and other goods.
In the coming years, the United States is poised to persist in these endeavors, harnessing the collective actions of our states, cities, businesses, and citizens, bolstered by enduring legislative measures like the Inflation Reduction Act, the most substantial investment in climate and clean energy to date. While some may insist on obstructing or stalling the ongoing clean energy revolution in America and beyond, the momentum towards a greener future is irreversible.
As we commend the Parties and the COP29 Presidency for attaining this milestone, it is imperative to acknowledge the extensive work that still lies ahead in realizing our climate objectives. Yet, today’s success propels us significantly closer towards our ultimate goal. On behalf of the American populace and the forthcoming generations, we must intensify our commitment to preserving a cleaner, safer, and healthier planet well within our reach.
