Evolution vs. Economics: The Truth Behind Wall Street!

Evolution vs. Economics: The Truth Behind Wall Street!

In a world where investments seem to be driven by Darwinian evolutionary theories, there lies a challenge to the very core of economic philosophy. Drew Estes believes that finance should look beyond physics and take inspiration from evolutionary biology. However, I beg to differ. I present a case for basing investment strategies on a theistic worldview instead.

  1. Philosophical Foundations: Estes likens products to DNA, where the units of heredity, or premes, drive commerce’s evolution. This viewpoint aligns with naturalist beliefs but neglects a theistic worldview’s essence-driven approach to existence. By shifting our philosophical foundation, we can reshape our investment strategies.
  2. Conflict of Worldviews: Naturalism and theism stand in opposition, each offering a distinct perspective on life and finance. The adoption of evolutionary theory in economics stems from a broader academic struggle between these philosophical pillars. C. S. Lewis aptly notes how belief in a lawgiver inspires scientific pursuits.
  3. Theistic Investment Processes: Contrary to naturalist ideals, a theistic worldview acknowledges moral values as guiding principles in investment decisions. The rise of biblically responsible investing (BRI) funds reflects an underlying need to align financial choices with personal ethics. Investing becomes a means of expressing intangible values.

Naturalism, Theism, and Finance

  1. Deep Concord: Alvin Plantinga eloquently articulates the harmony between science and theistic religion, contrasting it with the intrinsic conflict between science and naturalism. Evolutionary theories born from naturalism may not serve as robust foundations for investment practices rooted in theism.
  2. Values and Ideals: While naturalism restricts explanations to the physical realm, theistic worldviews elevate the human spirit above mere matter. Understanding human nature, including its flaws, becomes essential in setting ethical frameworks for financial endeavors.
  3. Essence vs. Existence: From ”In the Beginning” to ”an infinitesimal speck of dust,” contrasting worldviews shape economic theories. Theism emphasizes normative approaches, emphasizing abundance and stewardship, while naturalism leans toward positivist views founded on scarcity.

Products or People

  1. Metaphysical vs. Physical: Estes sees products as DNA, where ideas vie for survival akin to biological evolution. A theistic lens shifts the focus to people, considering corporate ethos and values as integral to business sustainability.
  2. Corporate Intentions: Chick-fil-A and Apple showcase how theistic foundations manifest in business operations. Their emphasis on ethical conduct and positive influence highlights a departure from solely profit-driven motives, affirming a deeper purpose behind commerce.
  3. Investing in Values: The proliferation of BRI-based funds signals a growing desire among investors to align financial pursuits with personal ethics. This trend underscores the evolving landscape of investment management, where heart-centered decisions drive meaningful outcomes.

As we navigate the complex realm of finance, let us not overlook the underlying philosophical underpinnings that shape our investment strategies. By embracing a theistic worldview, we can infuse our financial practices with moral integrity and purpose, ultimately redefining success beyond mere monetary gains.
