Today, Canadians across the country are observing National Truth and Reconciliation Day, a significant statutory holiday that falls on September 30 every year. This day serves as a tribute to the survivors of residential schools and acknowledges the lasting impacts of the residential school system on Indigenous communities. Various ceremonies and educational events will take place nationwide to raise awareness and foster an understanding of the history and legacy of these schools.
Open and Closed on National Truth and Reconciliation Day:
- Banks: All banks and financial institutions will be closed on Monday, with regular hours resuming on Tuesday.
- Transit (TTC and GO train service): GO Transit, TTC, and most regional transit services are operating on a regular schedule today.
- Government services: Federal offices and buildings will be closed, and employees entitled to a paid day off. Canada Post, the CRA, passport offices, and Service Canada will reopen on Tuesday.
- Grocery stores: Most grocery stores will remain open, but it’s advisable to check their hours beforehand.
- Malls/shopping centres: Most malls and shopping centres will be open.
- LCBO/The Beer Store: Local LCBOs will open at noon on Monday, while The Beer Store’s hours will remain unchanged.
Attractions Hours on National Truth and Reconciliation Day:
- Closed: Canada’s Wonderland, The Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), Museum of Contemporary Art (reopens Wednesday), Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), The Gardiner Museum.
- Open: CN Tower, Ripley’s Aquarium, STACKT Market, Toronto Zoo, Hockey Hall of Fame, The Distillery Historic District.
