ESTATE PLANNING RETIREMENT

‘I don’t want to superintend my brother’s finances’: Refused to be trustee for brother’s inheritance. Am I being selfish?

‘I don’t want to superintend my brother’s finances’: Refused to be trustee for brother’s inheritance. Am I being selfish?

Hi Moving Diaries,

Hey there, call me Fortunate Finance Guy! So here’s the deal – my parents are planning their estate, and they want to leave everything to my brother and his family. Totally cool with that since I’m already financially set. But then they drop a bombshell on me – they want me to be the Trustee of the trust they’re setting up for my brother. What?

Now, don’t get me wrong, I love my bro, but being in charge of his money? That sounds like a recipe for disaster. I don’t want to be responsible for his financial decisions, you know? If I’m too strict, he might hate me, and if I’m too lenient, he might blame me. It’s a lose-lose situation.

When I told my parents I couldn’t do it, they were not too happy. They thought I was just jealous of my brother or something. So, I whipped out my banking app to show them I have almost as much money as their entire estate – just got a big payout from work. But they still weren’t convinced.

Now, I’m stuck wondering if I should just suck it up and be the Trustee. Am I the A-hole here? I could really use some advice on this sticky situation!

Farewell,
Fortunate Finance Guy
